More updates to come!

Hello my friends.

I wanted to take a few minutes to talk to all of you out there about where we are in the production of Unwritten. We are strongly committed to making Unwritten a top notch RPG product. We want it to both capture the spirit of the Myst franchise as well as open up new vistas for adventures and experiences in D’ni. In that light, we’ve been trying out a lot of different options and variations of the Fate system, and even more so now that the FateCore version of the Fate game has been made available to supporters of the FateCore kickstarter.

So, we have been grinding away in terms of designing and redesigning the basic game, as well as engaging in alpha playtests of various mechanics. None of that is in a final form, but we continue to design, discuss and refine. I will be posting more often as we start to bring together the disparate elements together in more tangible forms. I hope to give you more insight into the philosophy behind Unwritten and how it develops.

60 hours to go on the FateCore kickstarter

Author: D'ni Admin  /  Category: Kickstarter

As I mentioned before, Unwritten uses the FateCore system as the basis for its RPG rules. About two months ago, the evil geniuses at Evil Hat started a Kickstarter for FateCore, asking for $3000. Right now, that Kickstarter is at over $350,000. Yes, they have exceeded their goal by over 10,000%.

As they have met and exceeded their goal, they have added additional rewards for higher amounts in the form of mini-supplements in the form of setting expansions, extra rules supplements, fiction and more. If you pledge $10, you get an electronic copy of the game AND electronic copies of all of these expansions as they are complete, for a total of over TWENTY ADDITIONAL products. That’s right, for $10, you get 20+ gaming resources written by some great authors, including John Rogers, head writer of the TV show Leverage. Here’s the list:

  • The Fate System Toolkit, including: The Magic System Toolkit and other extras toolboxes.
  • The Fate Worlds expansion collections, including: Tower of the Serpent, Kriegszeppelin Valkyrie, Wild Blue, Court/Ship, Burn Shift, Fight Fire, No Exit, The Ellis Affair, CrimeWorld, White Picket Witches, Timeworks, and Camelot Trigger.
  • The following full products once created and published: Shadow of the Century, Deck of Fate print & play, Do: Fate of the Flying Temple, the Fate Freeport Companion, the Young Centurions RPG, The Day After Ragnarok Fate edition, the Sally Slick and the Steel Syndicate novel, and Strange Tales of the Century.

And if you want physical copies, you can pledge a bit more.

This is the community that Unwritten will be a part of. And you still have a chance to be a part of this kickstarter. There are 60 hours to go. Check the link, pledge a little, get a lot.

FATE Core Kickstarter!

Author: D'ni Admin  /  Category: Announcements & News, Kickstarter

As we have discussed earlier, Unwritten will be based on the upcoming game engine FATE Core, which is the latest iteration of the successful and creative FATE system.

Well the good people at Evil Hat (is that an oxymoron?) are almost finished, and are doing a Kickstarter to get it out the door. The Kickstarter is already approaching its third stretch goal, and if you pledge $10US, you get all of the stretch goal additions.

So, take a look at the link and throw your money at them. FATE Core is looking to be a valuable toolbox for any GM or player.

I’d like to say a big thank you to all of the people who have liked, circled, shared and re-tweeted the news about Unwritten. We are looking to creating something very special that combines the best of the Myst and Uru franchises with the best of table-top role-playing. We are still working on a lot of details, and there is a lot of work to be done. But we plan to post periodic updates, tidbits, and other miscellany as we have them.

While I am here, let me answer a few questions that have popped up:

How do I find out more about the FATE system?

While we will be using our own variation of the FATE system, you can find out a lot about the system by going to Evil Hat’s FATE website at I also encourage you to look at the games that use the FATE system that are already out there. All of them have been terrific products.

Can I play a game set in historical D’ni?

The default setting of the game will be the ‘modern day’, after the events of Myst Online: Uru Live. However, the system can easily be used for other eras of D’ni. Unwritten will include guidance on how to do so, as well as other variations on the Myst universe.

Welcome to the Unwritten RPG website!

We at InkWorks Productions are proud to announce development of Unwritten, a role-playing game of adventure and exploration based on the Myst series of games by Cyan Worlds.

Myst occupies a special place in the history of video games. It was the best-selling PC game of the 20th century (only to be replaced by The Sims in 2002 – nine years after Myst’s initial release). Many considered Myst the ‘killer app’ that drove the adoption of CD-ROM and the first proof that video games could be art. It continues to be popular in the 21st century an an app for the iPhone and iPad.

Everyone who was playing video games in the nineties remembers playing Myst. But very few people realize that behind the game is a rich and varied background. It spawned four sequels, a spin-off series, a MMORPG, three novels and a possible major motion picture. Through all of those we catch glimpses of a myriad universes, perfect for adventure, exploration and story.

Our goal is to bring this world to the storytellers: the GameMasters and players of table-top role-playing games. Unwritten will show how to set adventures on the Ages of Myst and the ruins of the D’ni civilization. We are looking forward to the journey.
